The Department of Defense is gearing up to station as many as 20,000 troops on permanent duty within the United States. This marks the first major, permanent positioning of active duty military troops on United States soil since the Civil War.
According to the Pentagon, these troops are merely on guard in the event of a natural disaster or another terrorist attack, but with these actions being so few and far between, that rationale seems highly unlikely. Call me a cynic, but it is hard to believe anything that comes from the mouths of those in the Bush Administration.
