What is podcasting?

A podcast is a collection of digital media files which is distributed over the internet, often using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. A podcast is distinguished from other media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added, using a feed reader or aggregator capable of reading feed formats such as RSS and Atom.

What do I need to listen to podcasts?
The first thing you need is podcast client software. Your options include the latest version of Apple's ITunes which has the software built in, or Juice Receiver, to download and manage your podcasts. If you want to make your podcasts portable, you will need to transfer them from your computer to a portable media device.

Get Get ITunes Windows or Mac

Get Juice Receiver for Windows, OS X or Linux

What do RSS feed readers do?
Feed readers reduce the time and effort needed to regularly check websites of interest for updates, creating a unique information space or "personal newspaper." A feed reader is able to subscribe to a feed, check for new content at user-determined intervals, and retrieve the content. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox have built in feed readers.

I subscribed to a podcast. Why don't I hear anything?
First, be sure that you have audio player software; then, verify that the correct audio file was downloaded to your computer. You may need to modify the update settings in your podcasting software to ensure that this process occurs automatically. Next, check the update times in the description and make sure that a new edition should have been posted.
